DOMINICAN TRAVEL TIPS
Kristen Van Arsdale of Gilbert had lots of advice. "In my former career as a pilot, I worked for a charter airline out of Miami and flew under the colors of Air Dominicana for many years. I have been there hundreds of times. Here's my take: I absolutely love the Dominican Republic. The people are friendly, and the weather is great.
"As far as drinking water goes, resorts on Punta Cana are top-notch for the most part. Do not drink the tap water, but as far as fountain drinks and ice cubes, you should be OK. You can ask the hotel; they probably have a filtration system. In all my time there, I never had a problem with ice or fountain drinks.
"I have never heard of malaria in the Dominican or even gotten a mosquito bite there, so you may want to research that further.
"If the hotel has not already warned you, be aware that electricity has its problems. Expect power outages at least once a day (usually more like five or six times). It usually takes between 30 minutes to one hour to come back on. Most hotels use U.S. wattage, so a converter is usually not needed.
"If you buy any carved-wood products there, put them in the freezer for two weeks when you get back. This will kill any termites or wood-boring insects that may be in them. It's just a precaution, but I have experienced it myself and it works.
"The Dominican is very popular with German and English tourists, so expect to meet really fun people and have a great time."
