Basic Tourist Information

Traveling to the Dominican Republic unfortunately requires more than just buying a plane ticket and landing in paradise…and so does getting back to the United States.

Dominican Visas

Americans traveling to the Dominican Republic will need to obtain either the visa Dominican Republic tourists are required to have for extended stays, or you will need to purchase a tourist card at the Dominican Embassy prior to your arrival, or in the airports once you have arrived. The temporary visa Dominican Republic tourists generally receive, or the tourist cards, usually expire after thirty-to-sixty days so if you wish to extend your stay, you will have to contact the Dominican Embassy.

Entering the Dominican Republic

As previously mentioned, obtaining the tourist card or visa is necessary to fulfill the requirements for entry into the Dominican Republic. This tourist card is good for thirty days and costs approximately ten dollars at the Dominican airport. It should be noted that the tourist card allows for entry to the Dominican Republic for tourism purposes only. If you are looking to travel to the Dominican Republic for reasons other than pure tourism, you will have to get an approved visa from the Dominican Embassy or Consulates.

Other Tourist Information

There are numerous places to go in the Dominican Republic for tourist information, but it is important that you plan ahead for some parts of your trip. Namely, it is important that you obtain a passport before you go to the Dominican Republic, and that you take it with you on your vacation. While the passport may or may not be useful while you are on the island, it will be very difficult to re-enter the United States without having a passport. Perhaps no other piece of tourist information is more important than this as not having this passport could literally leave you stranded on an island.
